LEAN LOCK vs. Arm Lock

Arm Lock putting is a technique where the putter is intended to remain against the inside of your lead forearm during the putting stroke. The idea is to create a connection that reduces the tendency of the wrists to break down, but maintaining that connection can be difficult when using Arm Lock.  

The direction the putter face points at impact is by far the most important key to rolling the golf ball on your intended start line.

A 15-foot putt will go in the hole as long as the face is less than 0.5 degrees open or closed at impact. Increase to 2.0 degrees open or closed at impact and even a 5-foot putt will miss.

According to data collected by PGA Professional and Lead Putting Instructor at TPC Sawgrass, Mike Shannon, PGA Tour Professionals typically range between 3 and 6 degrees of rotation during the back swing and the average amateur averages about 20 degrees. Stabilizing the wrists and minimizing face rotation is the key to becoming a great putter.
